An amazing journey

Well…. What an amazing journey we have had. We have been sailing together for over 7 years, starting in Kiel 2009 in our first regatta and eventually going on to achieve our first goal of qualifying for the Olympics in London 2012. We spent our time travelling over the world, training with the best teams and not only having fun but working hard all the way. Our teammates and other competitors became our rivals and some of our best mates for life. After the amazing experience of London we decided to set our sights towards Rio. We felt we had the potential to be in the medal race and on our day to beat the best teams and win a medal.

What an amazing experience it was. Our planning for the Games had been top class. We had great training partners, an awesome coach and we knew that this was up to us to go and give it our all, which we did.

We have gone through so much together, the ups and downs of a campaign, from being stuck in our old transit van on our way home from Riva, to missing flights to Europeans, etc. etc. We have many many great memories of driving through Europe in our van, singing badly to the one CD that we had for at least 4 years and just generally having good craic. We have had some great results over the years being consistently in the top 10, medalling in Weymouth, Hyeres and toping it off by winning Palma in 2016.

You name it we’ve done it. We crashed our boat on a reef in Bahamas at our worlds, we bought a car and the next day it blew up in Aus., we nearly lost our van and boats down the slipway in Garda and that is only a few of the dramas we had during the campaign.

What a great pleasure it has been to sail with each other but we could not have achieved our dreams if it wasn't for all the family, friends, coaches, sponsors and supporters. It has been the most amazing life experience.

Special thanks to the: Irish Sailing Association, Irish Sports Council, Sport Northern Ireland, RYANI, Providence Resources, GUL, Carrickfergus Sailing Club, Ballyholme Yacht Club, Royal Ulster Yacht Club, Abbey Insurance Brokers, Ownies Bar, Robinsons Shoes, Belfast Suits, Euphoria Gym Limited, High 5 Nutrition, and many others who donated and supported us throughout our Campaign.

We have now decided to go our separate ways towards new adventures and life challenges. It has been a complete honour to sail together.

Thank you again to all who have supported us,

Ryan & Matt
